T-Systems Multimedia Solutions (MMS), a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom (parent company of T-Mobile), has launched a pilot program for Bitcoin mining using renewable energy.
The company announced the development today, stating that it has partnered with private bank Bankhaus Metzler for this initiative. According to the announcement, the objective of the pilot program is to obtain relevant data on stabilizing Germany’s energy grid during periods of high fluctuation.
Deutsche Telekom Utilizes Bitcoin Mining to Stabilize Germany Power Grid
The initiative was conceived to regulate power in Germany due to the inconsistent outputs from renewable energy sources. More specifically, the announcement acknowledged that renewable energy sources like solar and wind power often generate excess power at different times.

As such, the Bitcoin mining pilot program will utilize wind and solar energy sources to stabilize Germany’s power grid. This approach is akin to methods used in several other countries, including the United States and Finland. Specifically, Deutsche Telekom will harness the flexible load of Bitcoin mining to stabilize Germany’s power grid.
Benefits and Other Features of the Pilot
In addition to stabilizing the power grid, Deutsche Telekom anticipates that the project will be advantageous to wind and solar power-generating companies. The company stressed that these firms are grappling with the challenge of unpredictable control performance.
Moreover, Metis Solution will host and manage the Bitcoin mining project, while the ‘containers’ are situated at a solar-powered site at Riva GmbH Engineering. MMS will oversee the blockchain infrastructure aspect of the Bitcoin mining pilot, with Bankhaus Metzler focusing on the financial service segment.
Commenting on the development, Oliver Nyderle, MMS’s Head of Digital Trust and Web3 Infrastructure, acknowledged the necessity to manage the increasing fluctuations originating from renewable energy sources.
As such, Nyderle noted that the company will examine the control effect of Bitcoin mining on the power grid, thereby converting surplus energy into digital value.

The development comes several months after Deutsche Telekom initially disclosed plans to delve into Bitcoin mining. Dirk Röder, Telekom’s Head of web3 infrastructure and solutions, was the first to announce the development at a Bitcoin conference in Prague in June.
